What are Theme Communities?

Valdosta State University provides residential experiences commonly known around the country as Living Learning Communities (LLC), but as we are a part of the Blazer Nation, they are referred to as Theme Communities. Residents in our communities benefit from additional resources, support, and enhanced activities centered around a specific focus in order to elevate their residential experience.  At the center of all of our communities is the belief that learning is an active and dynamic process that occurs both inside and outside the classroom and is a process in which students use several perspectives to learn. On-campus living spaces provide an ideal learning environment as most students spend more collective hours in their living environment than in any other location on campus, including the classroom. The Theme Communities available for residents are Honors, Education,  American Sign Language Immersion, ROTC, Greek Life (for future sorority women going through recruitment their first-year), Global Immersion, First Generation communities, and Sullivan Scholars.

About the Communities:

 

American Sign Language Community

This community provides an opportunity for all students who are deaf, hearing, and hard of hearing to live together in a community where they can use and practice American Sign Language in daily living. Located in Hopper Hall.

Atlanta First Generation

The Atlanta First-Gen Theme Community is a dedicated space for students from Atlanta, Âé¶¹´«Ã½, who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. This community fosters a supportive atmosphere where residents can build strong connections with fellow first-generation students. Participants will benefit from tailored resources, academic support, and social events designed to ease the transition into college life and help them succeed. With mentoring opportunities and activities focused on personal and academic growth, this community encourages Atlanta students to embrace their college journey with confidence.

Global Immersion 

The Global Immersion community is an immersive living space for international and domestic students to come together and promote international education and cross-cultural understanding.  As a part of this community, students will have the opportunity to meet and learn from native speakers from different countries around the world, participate in programming and events that foster relationships among students of all different backgrounds, and broaden cultural awareness for residents on the floor and within the building.    

Greek Life Freshman Community

This community located in GA hall focuses on creating friendships, personal and leadership development, and retention of first-year women participating in the CPC Recruitment process. This community will receive programming for sorority women by sorority women with an emphasis on developing skills to be successful at Âé¶¹´«Ã½, within your sorority, and into the future.

Honors Freshman & Upperclassmen Community

The honors college at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ includes an exclusive residential and social community with dedicated facilities, smaller classes, scholarship opportunities, and rigorous interactions with faculty mentors. First Year Honors is located in Reade Hall. Upperclassmen are in Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Hall.

Jacksonville First Generation

The Jacksonville First-Gen Living Theme Community is designed for residents from Jacksonville, Florida, who are the first in their families to attend college. This community offers a supportive environment where students can connect with peers who share similar backgrounds and experiences. Together, residents will have access to resources and programs tailored to help them succeed academically, navigate university life, and celebrate their unique journey as first-generation students. Through workshops, mentoring, and social events, this community aims to empower Jacksonville students to thrive at every step of their college experience.

Open Housing

Open housing is available for anyone who wants to live with people with whom they feel comfortable, regardless of how they identify. Students who participate value the learning and growth stemming from experiences with diversity.

Air Force (ROTC) Freshman Community

This community prepares ROTC cadets for their life in college and beyond. Focusing on topics likely healthy living and global citizenship, this community will prepare our Air Force cadets for life outside of Valdosta, outside of Âé¶¹´«Ã½, and even outside of the country. Located in Patterson Hall.

Sullivan Scholars Program

This community is an invitation-only scholarship cohort program for teacher education located in Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Hall. Sullivan Scholars focuses on preparing students who want to teach in rural and or Title I Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Schools.
